Pest Dynamics in relation to Climate Change

Agricultural production and food security are strongly interlinked, and the impact of climate change would have major implications in determining socio economic fabric of all nations and the globe. It has been declared since long that climate changes have been happening, and the need for adaptations is stressed upon as an immediate response, although emphasis on mitigation of impacts is parallel. The challenges posed by climate change to agriculture and food security require scientific understanding of the impacts through global and local scale approaches leading to formulation and implementation of desired immediate and long term actions. Prediction of the impacts of climate change on food security requires per se assessment of vulnerability of food production to the changes of climate over space and time. The on-going technological innovations for welfare of human kind across all sectors from farming to industry have been continuous and progressive in response to the needs of the globe, and the ingredient of climate change only requires that the same developments are looked at from a different perspective with abiotic changes kept at a higher rank be it research or development or policy approach. Achieving increased food production through agricultural research is possible only through better understanding of the factors responsible for short and long-term global climatic behavior and to pay explicit attention to agroecological characterization, climatic variability, and long term climatic trends in agricultural research planning and resource allocation.

National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) was launched during February 2011 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with the funding from Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. The mega project has three major objectives of strategic research, technology demonstrations and capacity building. Assessment of the impact of climate change simultaneous with formulation of adaptive strategies is the prime approach under strategic research across all sectors of agriculture, dairying and fisheries. Evolving climate resilient agricultural technologies that would increase farm production and productivity vis-à-vis continuous management of natural and manmade resources constitute an integral part of sustaining agriculture in the era of climate change.

Pest and disease dynamics, changes in crop-pest/pathogen relationships, changed profile of insect pests and emergence of new biotypes due to climate change, and development of forewarning system.
